Lesson One: Introduction to Sea the Change

Hi there! This week Sea the Change launched our Education Initiative in Blue Mountain Elementary School and Eagle Crest Elementary School in Longmont, Colorado. We were extremely successful in reaching out to our community and the kids loved learning about our ocean. Here is our lesson plan.

Emma Pearson talking with students about exploration.

Subject Course: Ocean Conservation

Topic: Introduction to Sea the Change

Title: STC: Ocean Conservation through Classroom Education

Level(s): 2nd-4th grade

Lesson Objectives: to introduce students to Sea the Change and core values of conservation, education, and inspiration through exploration.

Summary of Tasks:

(:00-:05) Set up and Introduction to class, pass out one sheet of paper to each student. Have each student write their name at the top of the paper.

(:05-:15) Follow along first twelve slides of STC Intro Presentation, discuss importance and definition of conservation.

(:15-:20) Using slide 13, ask students to write down what they think the word exploration means. As they are doing so, pass out one piece of sea glass to each student. Have students discuss amongst themselves.

(:20-:25) Ask students to pick up their sea glass and observe. Have them write down their observations; what does it feel like? what does it smell like? what does it look like? Walk around and discuss.

(:20-:25) Summarize observations to entire class. Using slide 14, ask each student to describe their favorite place they have explored. Emphasize that exploration does not have to mean traveling across the world: it can simply mean trying a new food.

(:25-:35) Pass out sea shells and/or marine animal teeth. Have students once again write down their observations while you walk around the room and discuss with them.

(:35-:40) Using slide 16, explain STC's scientist panel and ask students to write down one question they have about the ocean. Explain that these questions will be answered by the scientists and students will be able to hear their answers during the next STC class.

(:40-:45) Using slide 17, have students turn paper over to the back and ask them to draw a picture of one of the three possible options.

(:45-:50) Collect papers to be distributed to STC scientist panel and collect all shells and sea glass.
